Gary Buchanan: The Ultimate Disney Cast Member #DisneySMMoms

"It doesn't matter where you take things from,
it matters where you take them to." - Jean Luc Godard
(one of Gary Buchanan's favorite quote)

If you've ever been to any of the Disney Parks, you've probably been touched by a Cast Member. A Cast Member is what employees who work at Disney are called. They add the pixie dust to your Disney vacations. The people who work hard everyday to make sure that your experience at Disney is the very best it can be. They are always smiling, engaging with you (or your children), and usually asking if they can be of help in any way.

We have had an exceptional experience with an incredible Cast Member in particular. We met Gary Buchanan, Disney Parks Social Media Managing Editor, a few years ago in Florida at Disney Social Media Moms Celebration. He was leading a conference breakout session called "Fire and Ice" about the Disney Parks Blog with the Disney Parks Social Media Director, Thomas Smith. Over the past few years, he has wowed us with his creativity and made us laugh with his cute and quirky videos. He's super smart, unique, and not afraid to take risks. He has been an inspiration and a mentor to hundreds of Disney employees, Disney Moms Panel members, and Disney Social Media Moms. Everyone who meets him feels happier, and when he leaves you are left feeling that you just met someone really special - Gary is the real deal!

This week, we learned that his time at Disney is coming to an end which makes us very sad. We will miss learning from him and just being in his presence at various Disney events. Gary made our Disney experience as a whole even more magical and we truly appreciate him! We gathered a few of our favorite "Gary" quotes about creativity and paired them up with photos from some of our favorite moments of him!

Good luck on your new adventure Gary! You are a character all your own. We look forward to seeing the magic you create in your next role. Thanks for the memories!

Some Thoughts on Creativity from Gary:
"Date an idea, don't marry it."

"Creativity is coloring outside of the lines."

"Have fun and play with no rules."

"Through play you go from Ha-ha moment to Ah-ha moment."

"You can build on an idea that's been done before and you make it your own."

"Keep your foot on the gas pedal!"

(Gary's favorite Disney quote:)
"If you are coasting, it means your are going downhill" - Walt Disney

Show Your #DisneySide in 2015: Have a Disney Side Party!

It's 2015 folks, a brand new year! It's time to show our Disney Side in a whole new way. Are you with us? In the next month or so we will be planning another magical #DisneySide Party. We will be hosting this party sometime in February and we can't wait. Who remembers last year when we had the Multi-Generational Disney-Side Tea Party for our Mom's Birthday? It was a great way to get all three generations to show their #DisneySide. From ages 1-100 you're never too young or too old for Disney. Make sure to follow along with the magic on @DisneySisters across all of our Social Media channels and by searching the hashtag #DisneySide.

We all have a Disney Side. If you are reading this blog, we know YOU have a rockin' Disney Side! It's the side of you that plays more, and has more fun. It's that geeky Star Wars side or that dazzling Princess side or even that spooky Disney Villain side. It's the side that likes to go to Disney Parks with your friends or family, it's putting on those mouse ears and not being afraid to be yourself! Maybe you like to decorate your hair, makeup, or nails like you favorite Disney character. Maybe you like to help people and flex your Superhero muscle or you have a big imagination that takes you on wild adventures. It's the feeling you get each time you walk down Main Street U.S.A. at Disneyland. All of these things that get you excited and make that happy childlike feeling in your heart come alive...
That's your DISNEY SIDE!

Will you be showing off your Disney Side this year? Whether you're visiting the parks or having a Disney Side Celebration, it's all about having fun, being together, and making memories that will last a lifetime! You can get lots more ideas from recipes to games, and activities by check out the official website of Disney Side Celebrations.

If you'd like to have a Disney Side Party of your own (and who wouldn't) here are a few handy tips:

Club Penguin Helps Millions of Kids Give Back 'Coins For Change'

Want to hear a heartwarming story about kids helping other kids in the ultimate gamer give-back? Yeah, we thought you might. The holiday season has come and gone but not without a really important contribution made by Club Penguin players like your kids (and maybe even you!) We were so super excited to hear that real world change happened this past month, to the tune of One Million Dollars USD all thanks to Disney and Club Penguin!

How did it work?
Club Penguin hosted a Coins for Change drive this December, where kids were encouraged to donate the virtual coins that they earned playing games on the site. Players from 193 countries participated in Coins for Change this year, donating more than 21 billion virtual coins! So while these millions of players were gaming and having fun, they were also doing good and making a difference at the same time. High fives all around!

How much of a difference did they actually make?
A huge difference! Club Penguin will be providing funds to build schools, playgrounds and libraries, and to protect endangered animals and their habitats. Funding the following projects because everyone deserves a safe place to play, learn, and grow:

1. Schools (Ethiopia, Nicaragua, China):
Through partnerships with organizations such as Free The Children and imagine1day , Club Penguin funds the construction of schools and classrooms, helping children get an education.

2. Libraries and Reading Spaces (Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, India):
Club Penguin works with Free The Children and Partners in the Horn of Africa to provide books, training and information. These libraries supplement the basic education program by encouraging kids to read and learn on their own.

3. Playgrounds (U.S., UK, Haiti, Afghanistan, Argentina):
With KaBOOM!, Club Penguin is building playgrounds and supplying Imagination playgrounds around the world. With Playground Builders, Club Penguin constructs playgrounds for children affected by war. These efforts provide jobs and bring money into local economies.

4. Animal Homes for more than ten different species (Argentina, India, Nepal, Russia, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Mozambique, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uzbekistan, Zimbabwe):
With organizations such as the Global Penguin Society, Wildlife Conservation Network and Rare, Club Penguin directly supports the protection and conservation of over ten animal species. Our partners use science management, field research and community education to help promote and protect endangered animals.

Through programs like Coins for Change, Club Penguin has contributed more than $12 million USD since 2007 to projects around the world, further raising social consciousness, inspiring and activating the 200 million players who take part in the online community.

Way to go Club Penguin Players! You Nailed It!
